Temple Emanu-El
Planned Giving & Endowments Building your legacy for our future
- What is a planned gift?
A planned gift is a meaningful donation arranged now to benefit Temple Emanu-El in the future—often through your estate. It can include a gift in your will, a retirement account, a life insurance policy, or other financial tools that reflect your values and commitment to Jewish life.
- Do I need to be wealthy to make a planned gift?
Not at all. Planned giving is for everyone. There is no minimum requirement, and every gift—no matter the size—helps sustain the vibrant spirit of Temple Emanu-El for generations to come.
- What are the most common ways to make a planned gift?
Many of our members choose to:
• Leave a bequest in their will or trust.
• Name Temple Emanu-El as a beneficiary of an IRA, 401(k), or life insurance policy.
• Establish a charitable remainder trust, which can provide income to you or a loved one before benefiting the Temple.
We are happy to walk you through these options and help you choose what feels right. - Can I create income for myself or a loved one with my gift?
Yes. Certain types of gifts—such as charitable remainder trusts—can provide income for life or for a fixed term. These gifts also offer potential tax advantages and ultimately support the future of Temple Emanu-El.
- Do I need to notify the Temple if I’ve included it in my plans?
Yes, if you feel comfortable. Letting us know allows us to honor your intentions, express our gratitude, and ensure that your gift will be used as you intend.
- What is the Heritage Society?
The Heritage Society celebrates those who have made a commitment to Temple Emanu-El through a planned gift. Members are invited to special gatherings, honored during their lifetimes, and serve as an inspiration to others. You may choose to remain anonymous if you prefer.
- Will my gift remain confidential?
Absolutely. Your privacy is important to us. You can choose whether or not to be publicly recognized for your generosity.
- Are there tax benefits to making a planned gift?
In many cases, yes. Certain planned gifts may reduce income taxes, capital-gain taxes, or estate taxes. We recommend speaking with your attorney or financial advisor for guidance based on your individual circumstances.
- Can I create income with my gift?
Yes! Temple Emanu-El has many plans for Gifts That Pay You Income. You can also provide income for a child, a grandchild, a parent, or a friend. That income can increase cash flow now and/or during retirement, pay for a college education, provide income for aging parents, or perhaps assist a loved one with special needs. You can also provide income to Temple Emanu-El by using a Charitable Lead Trust
- I am unable to make a current gift but I’d still like to support Temple Emanu-El in the future. Any ideas?
An easy and low-cost way to make a gift to Temple Emanu-El is to include us in your will or revocable trust. Gifts by Will are a major source of endowment support. Each individual legacy contributes to our financial strength and ability to meet the needs of our community. If you have not already done so, please consider putting Temple Emanu-El in your will or revocable trust. See our Bequest Language page for samples of how to do this. You can also designate Temple Emanu-El the beneficiary of Life Insurance, or Retirement-Plan Benefits.
- Who can I talk to about making a planned gift?
We’re here to help—warmly and confidentially. There’s no pressure, just a conversation.
